Every so often, a bit of movie dialogue enters the popular consciousness, and sticks. Take the line “I wish I knew how to quit you!” from the 2005 drama Brokeback Mountain. The phrase, repeatedly mocked by late night talk show hosts and stand-up comedians, quickly became a cultural cliché, joining the ranks of Jerry Maguire’s “Show me the money!” and “You can’t handle the truth!” from A Few Good Men.
In honor of the 79th Academy Awards earlier this year, BU Today set out to determine which film quotes were most popular at Boston University. We asked students in the George Sherman Union for their best Hollywood impersonations, and while the performances may not win any Oscars, they certainly offer a peek into campus pop culture.
Students recited one-liners from cult favorite Empire Records and mainstream comedies Old School and Wedding Crashers, as well as dialogue from the satirical Mean Girls and 1995 Academy Award-winner Forrest Gump. And not surprisingly, “I wish I knew how to quit you” made the cut as well.
