Women’s Hockey Meets BC at Walter Brown
4-9-2 Terriers take on 7-3-3 Eagles at 7 p.m.
When the BU women’s hockey team hosts Boston College tonight at 7 p.m., the first of four meetings for the Terriers and Eagles this year, the question for Terrier fans in the stands will be whether they want history to repeat itself. True, the team dropped two of last year’s three games against BC, but also pulled off an impressive upset in their first meeting last January, blasting the Eagles 3-1, for their first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent.
This year, the Terriers are 4-9-2 on the season, 2-3-0 Hockey East, having notched conference wins in a 3-2 victory over Maine on November 20 and a 3-0 shutout of the Vermont Catamounts at BU’s Walter Brown Arena on Sunday, December 2. Rookie Jillian Kirchner (SAR’11) collected two points in Sunday’s victory, and goaltender Allyse Wilcox (SHA’09) earned her first shutout of the season. She was named the Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, after racking up 62 saves over the weekend, including a 41-save performance against first-ranked New Hampshire on December 1 that ended in a 3-2 loss for the Terriers.
Other standouts this year include Laurel Koller (CAS’09), who leads the team in goals, with nine, and Melissa Haber (CGS’08), who earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors in October after recording a single-game team record 50 saves in the Terriers’ home opener, a 5-5 overtime tie against Dartmouth’s Big Green.
The Eagles are currently 7-3-3 on the season, with a 4-3-1 Hockey East record; they recently topped the ninth-ranked University of Connecticut Huskies 6-3. Sophomore Kelli Stack was named Hockey East Player of the Week after scoring a season-high four goals in the team’s win over the Huskies.
Tonight’s game, at 7 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena, will be broadcast live on WTBU, 640 AM or 89.3 FM, and on www.wtburadio.org.
