The BU Arts Initiative-Office of the Provost, the Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program, the Center for the Study of Asia, and the CAS Department of English are pleased to host Theatre Nohgaku, an international performance group dedicated to sharing the beauty and power of the classical Japanese noh drama with English speaking audiences. Theatre Nohgaku will be in residence at BU from March 25 to 31, including two free performances.
Each performances will include two pieces - Sumida River, an English translation of traditional noh (with traditional costumes and mask), and the world premier of Zahdi Dates and Poppies, a contemporary piece preformed in noh style written by Carrie Preston (BU Associate Professor).
Noh, one of the oldest continuing stage arts, combines highly stylized dance, chant, music, mask, and costume with intense inner concentration and physical discipline.
The performance will be closed captioned.
