Event: Latinas
Latinas features music composed or arranged by Latin American women from the 16th century to the present. The music – Early and contemporary, classical, folk, popular, and fusion – will be as varied as the individual personalities and home countries of its creators, which include Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Mexico. All of the music was composed or arranged for the Early and folk instruments that make up this unique ensemble, including viola da gamba, violin, Early and Venezuelan guitars, percussion, bass, and voices. All of it shares the passionate expressiveness and tremendous rhythmic vitality that have drawn audiences throughout the ages to music of Spain and Latin America.
Tickets $35, $25, $15 seniors. Students and low income $5
All proceedings for this concert will be donated to Niño Jesús Daycare in Venezuela.
The composers
Composers and arrangers featured in this program include Teodora Ginés, Modesta Bor, Diana Sáez, Esther Rojas, and Consuelo Velazquez, whose “Bésame Mucho” will be the most familiar piece in this eclectic, electric concert. Teodora Ginés’s music and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s text are from the Early Baroque period and are featured in a motet and several villancicos. Modesta Bor (1926–1998) will be represented by Rumbarroco’s arrangements of her Venezuelan folkloric vocal music. Also included will be “Für Elena”, a salsa by Diana Arismendi, one of the most important contemporary Venezuelan composers.
