OPPORTUNITIES: Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES)
BUCSA is pleased to announce two scholarship opportunities for students in Taiwan: the 2015 Taiwan Scholarships for up to 4-year degree study in Taiwanese universities (4 scholarships from TECO Boston, for US citizens residents of New England states), and the Huayu Scholarships for language and culture study, 1-year duration (10 scholarships from TECO Boston, for US citizens residents of New England states).
1. 2015 Taiwan Scholarships (deadline March 31, 2015):
The Ministry of Education (MOE), Republic of China (Taiwan), established the Taiwan Scholarship Program to encourage outstanding international students (excluding students from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau SAR) to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world.
Award:
The Taiwan Scholarship Program awards outstanding international students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Taiwan by awarding each recipient as follows:
1. Tuition and payment of academic fees, including credit fees.
Upon validation of tuition and above fees, each recipient receives one tuition grant per semester up to NT $40,000 (approximately US $1,400). If the total amount of the fees should exceed NT $40,000, the remainder of all costs shall be covered by either the recipient, or the recipient’s college, whereas any amount over NT $40,000 is the sole responsibility of the recipient. Tuition and academic fees do NOT include any of the following: administration fees, thesis advising fees, insurance premiums, accommodations, or Internet access, all of which are payable by the recipients.
2. Subsistence allowance:
The scholarship grants each recipient undertaking undergraduate studies a monthly stipend of NT $15,000 (approximately US $525); it offers each recipient undertaking postgraduate studies a monthly stipend of NT $20,000 (approximately US $700).

2. R.O.C. Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) (deadline March 31, 2015)
The Ministry of Education (MOE) in the Republic of China (Taiwan) established the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) program to encourage international students (except Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao SAR students) to undertake Mandarin language courses in the Republic of China (Taiwan), to provide opportunities to increase understanding of Taiwanese culture and society, and to promote mutual understanding and interactions between Taiwan and the international community.
Award:
A monthly stipend of NT $25,000 (Approximately US $850).
Duration:
HES awards students taking Mandarin language courses including short term classes which may last 3, 6, 9 months or one full year respectively. In principle, the duration of the scholarship is from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016. If recipients fail to arrive in Taiwan for enrollment during the above period, they will forfeit their right to retain their scholarship. Scholarship funding will become effective on the date of the recipient’s enrollment. Scholarship funding will end on the month of the expiration of the scholarship or if the scholarship is revoked.
