Youyi Zhang’s research examines the political implications of Chinese state-driven aid and investment in Southeast Asia and Africa, in particular power and infrastructure sectors. He is also a visiting fellow at Cambodia Institute for Peace and Conflict and a research partner working with Yangon School of Political Science. His most recent publications appear in the Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs and the New Mandala. Based on his field research in Greater Mekong countries, Zhang’s talk will focus on SOEs as agents of Chinese economic diplomacy and argue that firm-level characteristics, such a firms’ financial performance and their host countries partners’ commitment, are critical to facilitate or hinder development-stability nexus between China and the developing world.
