While recent media coverage has focused primarily on the Israel-Palestine and Ukraine-Russia conflicts, the Council on Foreign Relations reports that 28 conflicts are occurring worldwide, with 11 of them significantly affecting the United States. Additionally, the Genocide Watch has identified 12 active genocide emergencies and issued five urgent warnings for 2024.
Amidst these crises, citizen journalists, photojournalists, international correspondents, and documentarians are risking their lives to uncover the truth. Their work helps shine a light on stories that often go unnoticed and helps people understand the bigger picture of these global challenges.
This discussion will focus on why these stories matter to the American public, how we can improve how global news is reported both locally and nationally, and what steps can be taken to make the media more transparent and trustworthy, especially as new challenges emerge.
Speakers:
Greg Marinovich, Investigative Photojournalist and Master Lecturer, Boston University College of Communication, Emily Feng, International Correspondent, NPR; Tinku Ray, Executive Editor, The World at GBH; moderated by Cikũ Theuri, Senior Editor, Here & Now, WBUR
