Transfer Credits
If you are a current BU student who plans to take courses at another university, follow the steps below:
Check the BU Database
- Check the BU transfer equivalency database and/or Transferology to see if your proposed transfer course has already been evaluated by BU. (You will need to create a free account to access Transferology.)
- If your proposed course is listed with the exact course number you need, you will receive the equivalent course credit after you take these steps:
- Email your college (CAS students: fill out this form) that you plan to take this pre-approved transfer course.
- Successfully pass the course per college guidelines.
- Have the institution mail your official transcript to your college. CAS students: official transcript should be mailed to CAS Advising, 100 Bay State Road, Room 401, Boston, MA 02215. Or have a verified e-transcript sent directly from the school to casadv@bu.edu.
- If your course is not listed in the BU equivalency database (or is listed with a different course number than you need), go to the Next Steps section below.
Next Steps
- For all Biology courses, fill out the Transfer Course Equivalency Form.
- For non-biology courses, you will need to contact the relevant department to find out how to submit courses for evaluation. Physics courses can be submitted here and for chemistry and math courses you can fill out this Transfer Course Equivalency Form and submit it to chemeval@bu.edu for chemistry and mathdept@math.bu.edu for math courses.
- With the form you will need to submit a full course syllabus* including the weekly lecture topics and textbook information. If the course has a lab, you must also submit a full lab syllabus including the weekly lab topics and lab manual information.
- Once the transfer course has been reviewed, you will receive an email with the evaluation decision. Please allow up to three weeks for this process.
- After successfully passing the course per the BU college guidelines, have the institution mail your official transcript to your college. CAS students: official transcript should be mailed to CAS Advising, 100 Bay State Road, Room 401, Boston, MA 02215. Or have a verified e-transcript sent directly from the school to casadv@bu.edu.
* Submitting only a course description will NOT be sufficient for evaluation; a complete syllabus is needed. You may need to contact the external instructor or department directly to obtain a copy of the full syllabus.
Study Abroad Credits
- To request BU study abroad biology courses be counted toward your major, use the Transfer Course Equivalency Form. You must submit a full syllabus for each course (lecture and lab topics/schedule, textbook info., etc.).
- For study abroad programs outside BU, reach out to nonbusa@bu.edu to set up a time to speak with the Program Manager of External Programs.
Note: You will want to receive approval for study abroad courses before going abroad to confirm that your courses will count toward your major.

Petitions
This form is used to request a course substitution or alternative arrangement for Biology major or minor credit, including courses to count for the MS component of the BA/MS in Biology. Please use this right to petition sparingly. If you’re not sure whether or not something should be petitioned, you can email Veronica Lopez-Doherty or your academic advisor.
