The BU Hub is BU’s University-wide general education program. Like the BMB program, the Hub supports interdisciplinary learning across a variety of courses. Through the BU Hub, students will fulfill 26 units through 6 essential capacities. These capacities are:
- Philosophical, Aesthetic, and Historical Interpretation
- Scientific and Social Inquiry
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Global Citizenship
- Communication
- Intellectual Toolkit
Hub units are fulfilled through taking courses across any of BU’s 10 undergraduate schools. A course’s Hub units can be checked through the Course Description Search.
The courses a student will take for their major are likely to fulfill the following specific Hub units:

The courses a student is unlikely to fulfill through their major requirements are:

- Philosophical Inquiry and Life’s Meanings (1 unit)
- Aesthetic Exploration (1 unit)

- Ethical Reasoning (1 unit)

Because they are unlikely to be fulfilled through courses taken for the BMB major, these units should be targeted when a student is deciding which courses to take for Hub units.
Additionally, it is worth noting:
- Students will fulfill First-Year Writing Seminar and Writing, Research, and Inquiry through WR 120 or CC 102 and WR 150/151/152 or CC 201, respectively.
- Students on the pre-health track are likely to fulfill Social Inquiry I through PS 101/261 or SO 100/215, The Individual in Community through SO 100, and Ethical Reasoning through PS 101.
- The 4th semester of a second language will fulfill 1 of the 2 Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy units.
- Transfer courses from other schools can fulfill major/minor requirements if approved but will not fulfill Hub units.
