Thousands of alumni, students, parents, and friends around the world volunteered their time during the third annual Global Day of Service on April 14.
At nearly 100 official sites in 58 cities, almost 4,000 volunteers cleaned up parks and beaches, served food to the homeless, and participated in fundraisers such as iChase the Cure and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
The day was organized by the BU Alumni Association and the University’s Community Service Center.
Paul Farmer, international activist and cofounder of Partners In Health, gave the School of Social Work’s Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health on BU’s Global Day of Service.
Close to 500 people turned out to hear international activist Paul Farmer deliver the School of Social Work’s inaugural Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health at the School of Law auditorium. Farmer, cofounder of Partners In Health and an infectious disease specialist and medical anthropologist, has spent the past three decades delivering health care to the poor in Haiti and spoke about his work there and what’s ahead.
“The day was a huge success,” says Hannah Gathman, assistant director of programs and events at Development & Alumni Relations. “It’s always great to see alumni and students working side by side for any BU effort, especially one that’s service-focused.”
Members of the BU community talk about the impact of volunteerism at Boston University.
