The BU Brand Identity Standards have established the following naming conventions for all BU schools and colleges, departments, and centers, in both logos and in text:

  • The initials “BU” may not be part of a Boston University entity’s name in logos, as the sub-brand signature already carries “BU” in the icon that precedes the entity’s name. Therefore, combining the icon with an entity name that includes “BU” results in an awkward duplication. Exceptions to this convention need to be approved by the Office of the President, as has been done for BUWorks, BU Hub, BU Today, BU Votes, and BUild Lab.
  • Replace “and” with the ampersand symbol (&) in the proper names of schools, departments, centers, etc. Note that an ampersand should not be preceded by a comma. The ampersand should be used within a single entity. But “and” should be used when connecting two separate entities:
    • Rajen Kilachand Center for Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering
    • Boston University Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre and College of Fine Arts Production Center
  • Do not use “Office of” in a department name, except when the office name is the title of the office holder, such as Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Office of the Registrar.
