Last week's 1954 photograph of workers painting boston university on the newly acquired Braves Field prompted some curiosity about other Braves landmarks on campus. Stretching the point a little is this 1962 picture of what was supposed to be "Spahn's Diner," on Commonwealth Ave. near Babcock St. Many local fans know the bad-luck story of Braves Hall-of-Fame pitcher Warren Spahn, who was set to open the restaurant when word came from the ball club's front office that the National League team had been sold. As Spahn told the Boston Globe recently, in 1953 "the restaurant opened in Boston. The Braves opened in Milwaukee." Today the site of Hayes Bickfords diner is a Speedy Muffler Center.
