BU Yesterday

The unceasing, if undramatic, rains of the past weekend got several of us talking about the harshest weather ever to hit this region. One tragic storm was Hurricane Carol. On August 30, 1954, Carol slammed Rhode Island, Cape Cod and the Islands, Boston, and coastal New England. Seventy-eight people were killed and 1,000 injured. Downtown Providence and Boston were flooded, and 60,000 New Englanders had to be evacuated from their homes and offices. In our photo, a shipwrecked 1951 Packard sinks to its gunwales on Storrow Drive near the present site of the School of Law. The BU Bridge and the lights from Braves Field are visible in the background; the old BU Boathouse is across the Charles River to the far right. Photo by Boston University Photo Services
