Ladies of the lake: the Silver Bay Committee of Boston's YWCA, which was composed of several female students from the College of Liberal Arts (now the College of Arts and Sciences), came up with the idea in 1916 for a circus to benefit a YMCA conference center located on the western shores of Lake George in upstate New York. "For days, alluring posters of smirking clowns, graceful ballet girls and large-eyed elephants" were posted around campus, urging students not to miss the BU CLA Circus, according to the Hub yearbook."When the eventful night came, it was a large throng" that greeted a troupe marching in costume and later performing skits and dramatizations. The Silver Bay Association conference center, located on a 700-acre site in Adirondack Park, was founded in 1902 and served as a yearly retreat for YWCA members. "We think of it as the dreamland, the fairy paradise, and to visit this place we make any sacrifice," wrote Doris Kennard (CLA'16). "Six hundred girls gather together. And what glorious times they have! The day is filled with everything from serious talks in the orchard to a dip in the lake, mountain climbs or a tennis tournament." Photo from the 1917 Hub yearbook
