A lounge act from the 1930s: the Charles River residences for men included four houses for freshmen and six for upperclassmen on Bay State Road overlooking the Charles River, and one house for graduate students on Beacon Street. Spacious lounges, such as the one shown above, were located on the first and ground floors of the residences. In this "home-like atmosphere," which included a game room for table tennis and other indoor activities, students were encouraged to gather on winter evenings "around a crackling fire and enjoy fellowship and discussion." Room rates for the year ranged from $111 to $191, according to location, which included maid service: each morning the beds were made, furniture dusted, floors swept, and rooms put in order.
