When bored with military-style push-ups, Sargent women performed the roommate-raise. This 1962 Sargent College gym class reflects the interest of President John Kennedy (Hon.'55) in physical education for all American youth. In February 1961, Kennedy asked the American Association of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation to promote an effective national fitness program. The President's Council on Youth Fitness (originally formed in 1956 by President Eisenhower after European children surpassed American kids on a battery of physical fitness tests) recommended that schools provide a 30-minute period of vigorous exercise, exclusive of recess, five days a week for first through sixth grades, and a regular class in physical education five days a week for junior and senior high school students.
