Memorial service to honor C. Allyn Russell

C. Allyn Russell, a CAS and GRS professor emeritus of religion, who died on January 25 at age 84, will be honored at a memorial service at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 17, at the Rivercrest Deaconess Long Term Care Facility’s Duvall Chapel at 80 Deaconess Road in Concord, Mass. Beginning in 1961, Russell taught at BU for more than two decades, focusing on such religious and social reformers as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59), and Albert Schweitzer. He was awarded the Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching, the University’s highest teaching honor, in 1982. Instead of flowers, gifts can be made to the C. Allyn and Elizabeth Russell Fund, which will benefit the College of Arts and Sciences. Mail contributions to: C. Honorary Scarlet Key Award nominations sought

The Office of the Dean of Students will accept through April 14 nominations for the 2005 Honorary Scarlet Key Award to honor an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the extracurricular life of the University’s students. Nominees for the Honorary Scarlet Key Award, which is distinct from the Scarlet Key Awards presented to graduating seniors, may include University students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and members of the community at large. The winner will be recognized at this year’s annual Scarlet Key Award Tapping Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, May 19. To nominate someone, send a letter that includes examples of the nominee’s contributions to: 2005 Honorary Scarlet Key Award Committee, Office of the Dean of Students, 775 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA 02215. Lia to star on National Academy of Sciences Web site

Lia, a cartoon character created at BU to promote science to girls ages 8 to 14, has been selected to star in the National Academy of Sciences’ soon-to-be launched Web site, iWASwondering.org. The spunky and photonics-savvy Lia, whose name stands for light-in-action, will be the host of the educational site, which includes a portal to the academy’s new Women’s Adventures in Science book series. The Web site is expected to be launched in September. Lia was created by the Photonics Center, the College of Communication, and the Boston-based children’s media firm FableVision, which is designing, producing, and programming iWASwondering.org.

Women’s Guild calls for short story submissions

The BU Women’s Guild is accepting short story submissions from BU undergraduate women for the seventh annual Florence Engel Randall Fiction Award, which includes a cash prize. The award will go to the author of a single short story of any length selected by former Randall Award winner and published fiction writer Daphne Kalotay (GRS’94, UNI’98). Florence Engel Randall (1917-1997) was the author of The Almost Year, a 1971 American Library Association Notable Book, five other successful novels, and more than 100 short stories, and was devoted to supporting the careers of young writers. Medical Campus to show off creative side at Art Days 2005

The BU Medical Campus’ 15th annual Art Days exhibition takes place April 19 and 20 in the School of Medicine’s Hiebert Lounge. Students, staff, and faculty from all Medical Campus schools are invited to submit artwork in any medium, such as painting, photography, poetry, sculpture, and needlework. Pieces will be accepted on April 15 and returned April 21 and should be framed, if possible. Specific instructions for submitting work will be sent to those who respond. President ad interim Aram Chobanian began Art Days when he was Medical Campus provost to foster the support and growth of the creative arts at BUMC.
