Affordable memberships draw faculty, staff, and alumni to FitRec

By Jessica Ullian

As the Fitness and Recreation Center officially opens its doors on April 1, more than 1,000 faculty, staff, alumni, and part-time students are already enrolled and ready to begin using the wide array of fitness facilities. “This building is an amazing benefit to faculty and staff,” says Warin Dexter, director of the department of physical education, recreation, and dance (PERD). “It provides our community with an opportunity to develop healthful habits.”

Full-time students can use the facility for free, and a variety of inexpensive membership options are available for faculty, staff, and alumni. The trial membership offer, which allows faculty and staff a three-month membership for $99, expired on March 31, but other options remain available for University employees and their spouses and dependents.

A regular monthly membership costs $39.95 for a faculty or staff member, $49.95 to include dependents under age 18, $69.95 to include a spouse, and $79.95 for a family package. For part-time students, the fees are $15.95, $19.95, $27.95, and $31.95, respectively. Locker and towel services are available for a fee for the period of April, May, and June.

When the new fiscal year begins on July 1, members can opt to remain on a monthly payment plan or choose a one-time annual fee of $385, which expires June 30, 2006. The annual membership plan offers packages with access for dependents and spouses at a cost of $480, $675, and $770. Annual fees for part-time students begin at $154, and those with access for spouses and dependents are $192, $270, and $308.

Towel and locker services can be purchased annually as well; towel service is $35 a year, lockers are $60, and both together are $75. Lockers are also available for daily use, at no charge.

Membership also means a significant discount, in some cases up to 40 percent, on most PERD classes, which include fitness, water sports, and dance, as well as children’s programs.

The FitRec Center is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. A full list of facility hours is available at www.bu.edu/fitrec/facilities/fitrec/facilityhours.htm.

The member services office is at the front entrance of the Fitness and Recreation Center, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employees can pay the monthly fees through payroll deduction, although no tax benefits are available. For more information, visit the office or call 617-358-3740. Information is also available at www.bu.edu/fitrec.
