DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

The Boston University Law Review is deeply committed to diversity in its membership and scholarship. Diversity is not limited to a list of identities, but we recognize how varied life stories create values and perspectives that are not traditionally highlighted in legal scholarship and academia.

Historically, marginalized voices have been stifled, and law reviews have not until recently begun to prioritize amplifying these voices. We acknowledge this imbalance and strive to ensure the Boston University Law Review’s staff is diverse and reflective of our student body. Our scholarship is strengthened by the unique insights every member contributes to the editorial process. Moreover, a diverse editorial staff enhances our membership experience by ensuring our collaboration reflects varied experiences.

To that end, the Boston University Law Review has taken the following steps to improve diversity amongst membership over the years:

  • Expanding our Editorial Board by adding two Diversity and Inclusion Editors who oversee D&I efforts for both our scholarship and membership;
  • Collaborating with affinity groups to hold journal “off-the-record” events providing insight and mentorship for the writing competition;
  • Incorporating personal statements into the writing competition, permitting comprehensive and holistic review;
  • Changing our editor selection process to reflect total class size to ensure 1L applicants have equal opportunity to be selected from year-to-year;
  • Forming a diversity committee headed by our Diversity and Inclusion Editors tasked with outreach and mentorship.

We know this is not sufficient, which is why we continue to work with the law school administration to make the writing competition as equitable as possible. We aspire to see this list of efforts increase annually as we continue to promote diverse voices.
