Find Internships and Jobs
For jobseekers with disabilities, job and internship searching may be difficult due to issues from inaccessible job applications to inequitable hiring processes. The Job Accommodation Network provides free consulting services for individuals with physical or intellectual limitations that affect employment. The Workforce Recruitment Program is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private-sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities. Lime Connect offers scholarships, internship programs, and professional development opportunities for students and professionals with disabilities, aiming to prepare and connect high-potential candidates with top-tier corporations.

Building community among fellow students and professionals with disabilities can make navigating the career space less daunting. Examples include American Association of People with Disabilities and Learning Disabilities Association of America.
Know Your Rights
There are laws that protect you from harassment, discrimination, and harm as you navigate your career. The Department of Labor has put together this two-page Disability Rights guide to assist people with disabilities in navigating the job application process and workplace environment. Additionally, The American Civil Liberties Union has put together this Know Your Rights: Disability Rights guide to navigating the workplace, public spaces, renting a home, and more as a person with a disability.

Disability & Access Services provides services and support to ensure that all BU students can participate in the various opportunities and events on campus. The Disability Collective is a space for people with disabilities to come together.
A non-BU resource, College Scholarships for Students with Disabilities, has information on scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students.
First Generation or Low Income
You may be worried about facing difficulties as you explore career options, build your professional network, begin the job search process, and evaluate job offers. But remember that you have many qualities that employers seek, such as adaptability, strong values, and resourcefulness.
Find Internships and Jobs
There are several job and internship boards, as well as specialized opportunities, that support the unique experiences of first-generation college students, including the Diversity Job Board. Specialized opportunities include FirstGEN Fellows, which supports first-generation college students interested in pursuing careers in social justice.

Groups include America Needs You, Rise First, I’m First!, and CareerSpring (passcode BOSTONU).
EDUMED is an industry-specific group that provides resources for students who want to pursue a career in healthcare. LinkedIn is also home to many industry and identity-specific networking groups.

Boston University is committed to supporting first-generation and/or low-income students across all 17 schools and colleges and the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences. BU’s Newbury Center is dedicated to supporting and advocating for first-generation students. FLIP @ BostonU is part of the larger FLIP national organization, which supports first-generation/low-income students by providing access to tangible resources, conferences, and more.
International
Students and graduates seeking employment outside of their home country face some unique challenges in the job search process. With the extra component of obtaining a work visa, the search becomes limited to employers who will sponsor or hire those with time-limited work authorization.
Find Internships and Jobs
In addition to GoinGlobal, there are many job board resources available for international students.
Jooble allows job seekers to find roles in over 40 countries worldwide. The H-1B Employer Data Hub identifies employers who have successfully petitioned for H-1B visas. This website allows you to filter the employer list and download the results. For international students in MET, COM and QST students, Interstride is a career platform designed to enhance career exploration and the job search for international students. Spaces like Business Networking International and University-affiliated LinkedIn groups are great spaces to connect with peers, professionals, and BU community members.
Know Your Rights
It’s important to be aware of your rights and capabilities as an international student in the United States. BU’s International Students & Scholars Office can be your first point of contact for questions regarding your immigration status and work allowances. The International Labour Organization provides a wide range of information on various employment-related topics and laws in nearly every country.
Find Support at BU
Because Boston University enrolls so many international students, there is a strong community of support across campus. The International Student Organization is an association of students from around the world representing the diverse cultures and lifestyles of different countries from our global community. There are groups affiliated with individual schools and colleges around campus, such as the International Students Organization at the School of Public Health, which emphasizes the importance of culture in the public health sphere. Student Government represents the interests of all domestic and international undergraduates at BU.
LGBTQIA+
You may have concerns and questions about your career related to your LGBTQIA+ identity, whether you want to make this part of your identity a central part of your professional path or not.
Find Internships and Jobs
There are numerous job boards that cater to the LGBTQIA+ community, such as Pink Jobs or WorkplaceDiversity.com. You can also search for community-friendly employers on general job boards like Indeed or do a web search to identify employers to target.
Some industries also have LGBTQIA+ job boards, such as CenterLink LGBT Jobs and Careers Board (LGBT community organizations), Funders for LGBTQ Issues (philanthropic organizations), The LGBTQ+ Bar (legal jobs), or LGBTQ+ Victory Institute (public service).
Find Community: Professional Associations and Networking Groups
There are professional associations and advocacy groups within the LGBTQIA+ community. Examples include 500 Queer Scientists (STEM and STEM-supporting fields), National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (business), and Out Professionals (nonprofits).
Additionally, many industry-specific professional associations have affinity groups for different populations. Examples include the American Library Association’s Rainbow Round Table and the American Medical Association’s Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Issues.
Plus, don’t forget to look for platform-specific networking groups. LinkedIn has more than 500 LGBTQIA+ networking groups, from general to industry-focused and employer-specific. BU Connects (the BU community networking platform) has the LGBTQIA+ Network for LGBTQIA+ BU students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
Know Your Rights
As you consider different locations for internships and jobs, make sure you understand your rights. Look at employment nondiscrimination as well as housing and healthcare. A number of national organizations have helpful resources. The Movement Advancement Project has a tool that maps employment nondiscrimination. The Human Rights Campaign has a tool to check policies at employers, municipalities, and healthcare facilities. Lambda Legal has a state-by-state guide to rights as well as a legal help desk.

BU has a variety of LGBTQIA+ groups and resources for students, including the LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center. The Queer Activist Collective (Q) is dedicated to providing the BU community with ample programming and up-to-date resources.”The Center for Gender, Sexuality & Activism is a student-run safe space for all genders and sexualities. The Dean of Students has a list of LGBTQIA+ campus resources. Also, although focused on supporting faculty and staff, the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff has a helpful list of campus groups, including those for students.
Undocumented and DACA
Undocumented jobseekers are among those most likely to face discrimination during the job search process and once they’re on the job, from severe undercompensation to poor working conditions.
Find Internships and Jobs
Most job applications will ask, “Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?” If you have DACA, you are able to answer “yes” and continue through the application and hiring process without disclosing additional information about your background. BestColleges has an article that details employers that support DACA and Dreamers.
Find Community: Professional Associations and Networking Groups
My Undocumented Life has information on applying to graduate and professional school, spaces to build community, and life after attending college. Immigrants Rising offers a space that is filled with career resources and community. TheDream.US is another resource hub for scholarship information, employment opportunities, and general guidance on being an undocumented student/professional. United We Dream and Undocublack Network are community spaces for undocumented students to support one another and build relationships.
Know Your Rights
Knowing your rights as an undocumented student is key for your safety and security. The National Immigration Law Center is one of the leading organizations in the US exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of immigrants with low income. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has put together a list of useful DACA resources, including information about DACA renewal, social security numbers, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), and more.

The International Students & Scholars Office is a place where international students (regardless of immigration status) with questions about DACA’s status or their own immigration status may contact the office in confidence.
Veterans
Veterans offer complex lived experiences and skills to the workplace. Despite these experiences and skills, veterans may face ageism and perceived inabilities during the job search process.
Find Internships and Jobs
The transition from military to civilian life can be difficult, especially when job searching is involved. The Veteran Employment Center and Veterans’ Employment and Training Services (VETS) help make this process easier. CareerOneStop, which is sponsored by the US Department of Labor, connects veterans with employment services and jobs that value skills learned in the military.

Veteran Business Network help you find and connect with veteran-owned businesses. American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine has a veteran-focused community, Military/Veterans Affairs Networking Group, offers networking opportunities. Be sure to look into state or regional networking groups, such as Veterans Collaborative, which is specifically for veterans living in Massachusetts.
Know Your Rights
As a veteran, you have federal rights that help protect you in the event of workplace discrimination and general bias as a jobseeker. The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs guide details the affirmative action protections of the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act for veterans seeking employment at companies that do business with the federal government. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has created a Veteran’s Guide to Employment Rights Under the Americans with Disabilities Act to assist veterans in understanding their rights as they transition to civilian employment and access reasonable accommodations.

Veterati is an online mentorship platform for BU’s military-affiliated students to connect military-affiliated community members to professional mentors. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Education and Career Counseling Program helps service members transition through career choice assistance, benefits coaching, and personalized support. BU’s Veterans & Military Services office can assist with applying your benefits to your BU education.
