Course Overview
CAS IN 299 is a two-credit, seminar-style course that fulfills the Teamwork/Collaboration BU Hub requirement. Taught by EL Connector staff, the course complements the experiential learning you’ll be doing in your internships, by encouraging critical self-reflection and the development of career readiness competencies.
Registered students are responsible for securing your own internship placement and for submitting a complete application. Only students with approved applications receive permission to register for IN 299. Read more about the application process and eligibility requirements below.

International students must apply in time to have their CPT request approved before the first meeting of IN 299. (CPT requests take approximately 10 business days to review.) No students will be registered for the course after the first class meeting.
CAS IN 299 cannot be repeated for credit; participation in the course is limited to one semester.

To receive credit for the course and earn the BU Hub unit for Teamwork/Collaboration, students must attend all class meetings and complete the required coursework. Frequently Asked Questions
Expand the tabs below to find answers to FAQs about IN 299.
I know I’m going to get an internship offer, but I don’t have it yet. Can I still apply to take IN 299?
Unfortunately, no. Your supervisor’s signed confirmation of the internship offer is required at the time you apply.
Can I take IN 299 in Fall 2025 for an internship that I did/will do in another semester?
Unfortunately, no. IN 299 must be taken alongside your internship, in the same semester. For Fall 2025, you must start interning on/before September 9, 2025. Your internship must continue through at least the week ending on December 12, 2025, and you must intern for a minimum of 6 hours per week during that period.
If I don’t take IN 299 in Fall 2025, will I have the chance to take it later?
Yes! We plan to offer this course every fall and spring semester going forward. If you’re looking to take an internship course during Summer Term, check out IN 399.
I have an internship that started this spring (or summer) and will continue into Fall 2025. Can I apply to take IN 299 next semester?
The answer depends on your citizenship status. If you are a US citizen or permanent resident: yes. As long as your internship meets the minimum requirements for the program, it may start earlier and/or end later than the dates of the program. If you are an international student, please check with ISSO. Due to federal regulations regarding work authorization, it is likely your internship cannot extend beyond the dates of the program. Your ISSO advisor can help you determine what is possible.
I am an F-1 international student. To participate in this program and qualify for CPT, can my internship relate to my minor, instead of my major?
Unfortunately, no. As per federal regulations, only off-campus internships directly related to your major – and not your minor – can be considered for CPT. However, you may be able to participate in an on-campus internship without work authorization. Please consult with your ISSO advisor for further information.
Does IN 299 count towards the requirements for my major?
No. The credits for IN 299 count towards the graduation requirements for your CAS degree, but they do not count towards the requirements of your major/minor.
What's the difference between IN 299 and IN 399?
IN 299 is a two-credit, in-person course offered only in the fall and spring, which satisfies the Teamwork/Collaboration requirement for the BU Hub.
IN 299 may only be taken once and is not repeatable for credit.
IN 399 is a one-credit, asynchronous online course offered in the summer. It is restricted to CAS undergraduates who need to be registered for course credit in order to intern off campus (e.g., international students and students whose placements require them to be registered for an internship course).
In certain situations, IN 399 may be repeatable for credit. Email casel@bu.edu if you are interested in repeating the course.
Are students interning at Boston Medical Center eligible to take IN 399?
No, only students who meet the eligibility criteria and are interning at non-BU-affiliated sites are able to register.
