FY101 Peer Mentor Role + Application
Peer Mentors are an integral part of FY 101, a 1-credit course offered to first-year students during the fall semester. Peer Mentors are responsible for helping plan syllabi and course activities, facilitating discussion, and promoting student engagement both in and outside of the classroom. Serving both as role models and valuable resources to first-year students, Peer Mentors assist in making connections with a range of campus departments, student organizations, and the vast array of opportunities that exist at Boston University and in the great city of Boston. The Commitment
Summer:
- Activity development with your instructor (generally via e-mail and not a lot of time needed)
- Occasional communication with your first-year students starting in August
Fall:
- Weekly FY101 Class (1 hour)
- Weekly Check-Ins with your Instructor (1/2 hour)
- Required Class: SED ED:245- Peer Counseling- Wednesdays 2:30pm-4:15pm
- Peer Mentors earn 2-units through this class as well as one Hub Requirement in Oral and/or Signed Communication
- You cannot take more than 20 units/semester i.e. you cannot overload and serve as a Peer Mentor
- Regular communication with your Instructor and students
Qualifications
Peer Mentors must meet the following requirements:
- Be a student, in good standing
- Have at least sophomore standing and completed at least one semester at BU by Fall 2025
- Achieved at least a 2.5 GPA
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and have the desire to continue to develop these skills throughout the semester
- Be enthusiastic and willing to share their own experiences as a student at the University
- Be interested in supporting the successful academic and social transition of first-year and/or transfer students

Peer Mentors will have the opportunity to network with other student leaders, administrators and staff from across the College and the University while receiving mentoring from their assigned course instructor. They will gain valuable leadership, presentation, and communication skills while making a significant impact on the experience of first-year and transfer students at Boston University.
Peer Mentors will also receive 2-units in a graded course that counts towards graduation.
Peer Mentors will receive one Hub requirement in Oral and/or Signed Communication.
