A Message from Malika Jeffries-EL, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences

Welcome to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston University

Graduate education is essential to the academic vibrancy of Boston University. Accordingly, it is a pleasure to lead the first, largest, and most diverse graduate school at BU. We offer MA, MS, MFA, and PhD degrees across more than thirty different programs in the humanities and the mathematical, natural, and social sciences, with more than 2000 students studying with us from across the United States and around the world. GRS students come to us from a wide variety of backgrounds with different abilities, cultures, gender orientations, religions, and socioeconomic statuses, which bring unique perspectives, that we welcome and value, to their studies.

This is an exciting time to pursue graduate education as humankind faces many challenges that need creative, new solutions and innovative, well-educated minds to find these solutions. This happens through a vital, reciprocal relationship as the faculty aptly guide our graduate students through their studies while our students contribute to the intellectual vitality of our university through their scholarship, service, and teaching. I encourage you to take full advantage of the variety of workshops and professional development opportunities available to acquire core competencies like time management, communication, and teaching. These skills will serve you during your time here and prepare you for whatever career path you follow.

From start to finish, GRS staff will be here to support you every step of the way. Our office handles all admissions actions, financial aid, student records, and graduation. We also provide support for the development and well-being of our students during their time here through a range of services, programs, and support of student organizations. Finding balance between work and life is crucial to success. Fortunately, you have chosen to study in one of the finest cities in the world, so take advantage of the variety of social opportunities available such as athletic events, theater, fine arts, and green spaces.

I wish you the best of luck in your educational pursuits and all your future endeavors.
