The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers six certificate programs designed to deepen or broaden your graduate education and allow you to create a unique path of study, inspired by your individual interests. Typically, no additional coursework is required because courses completed for the certificate program usually also fulfill course requirements toward the student’s degree program.
Students in a Boston University graduate or professional program who fulfill the requirements for completion as outlined by the department, in addition to the requirements of their degree programs, can earn a graduate certificate in one of the following concentrations.

African Studies
The Graduate Certificate in African Studies, offered through the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, provides specialized training and research experience in African studies to advanced students interested in fields such as law, management, international relations, communication, education, fine arts, medicine, and public health. Asian Studies
The Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies, offered through the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, helps students to gain a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and cross-national understanding of Asia. Students, in consultation with their departments, can take a full range of Asian Studies and language courses across the disciplines. Biogeoscience
The Advanced Graduate Certificate in Biogeoscience, available to qualifying Ph.D. students, emphasizes interdisciplinary research and coursework, focusing on the biogeochemistry and biogeophysics of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with faculty and students drawn from the Departments of Biology, Earth & Environment, and Archaeology. Museum Studies
The Department of History of Art & Architecture offers a Certificate in Museum Studies to students enrolled in appropriate master’s or doctoral programs at Boston University. This certificate is usually completed in conjunction with the MA in History of Art & Architecture; however, the certificate program in museum studies is also open to students enrolled in cognate BU graduate degree programs. Teaching Writing
The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Writing prepares doctoral students to teach writing-intensive seminars at the undergraduate level.
