Internships for Undergraduate Students
The College of Arts & Sciences offers its undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in both off- and on-campus internship programs, helping our students to gain critical, real-world experience in the workplace. As a CAS student, you can apply the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom to hands-on roles in a variety of fields. Finding an Internship
If you’re unsure of where you want your professional life to take you, the Center for Career Development (CCD) can assist. There you can connect with successful alumni, receive resume help, check out job postings and online resources, and get advice from their professional staff.
You can also stop by the CAS Advising Office or the Office of Student Programs and Leadership, both located at 100 Bay State Road, to meet with an advisor.
On-Campus Internships
- The CAS On-Campus Internship Program provides you with critical workplace experience through on-campus internships and a one-credit course that focuses on the development of your academic and career goals. Opportunities include work in marketing, administration, sustainability, archiving, and IT.
- You can also find work-study and campus jobs throughout the university through the Student Employment Office.
Off-Campus Internships
Whether in the Boston area or at one of BU’s study abroad locations all over the world, you can find opportunities that will pique your interest and support your goals:
- Sign up for Handshake via the CCD, which has an expansive and constantly updated list of positions and alumni. The CCD will also post about campus recruiting events.
- The Public Humanities Undergraduate Fellows is a selective program that offers BU humanities majors stipend-supported summer internships. The fellows make up a group of students who will discover and enhance the humanities’ place outside of the University. Opportunities are in different organizations around Boston including technology, social services, digital storytelling, education, economic development, the arts, management training, and international diplomacy.
- Experience the global workplace while also immersing yourself in another culture. Internships are a vital part of your study abroad experience. Connect with the Study Abroad office to see what opportunities are available in your desired area.
- Internships can be considered part of your Directed Study. If you find one that fits your pursuits, reach out to the Directed Study office and your advisor. Additionally, you may find an internship that connects to your research project. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) can help with that.
- In fall 2020, the CAS Dean’s Office announced a new call supporting CAS undergraduate research internships, focusing on the following two thematic areas: 1) social justice and inclusion and 2) sustainability. This endeavor, entitled the CAS Social Sciences Undergraduate Internships in Social Justice and Sustainability, aims to help support and advance faculty research in these areas and to provide undergraduate students interested in honing their research skills with an experiential learning opportunity.
Financial Support for Your Internship
Don’t let the “unpaid” descriptor scare you. Funding for internships is available.
- The Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program is an educational program for sophomores and juniors that provides a living stipend to support participation in unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations. This is particularly great if you’re interested in health care, education, the arts, conservation, or other areas of social need.
- The CCD has lists of national and internal fellowships and scholarships that could help. If you need additional financial guidance, you can reach out to the Office of Fellowships & Scholarships and subscribe to its newsletter.
