Anthony Janetos headshotAnthony Janetos, esteemed climate change scholar and CAS professor of earth and environment, passed away on August 6 of pancreatic cancer. Tony will not only be remembered for his scientific discoveries but also his ability to translate them for the public and bring about change. His work informed climate planning at the United Nations, and he testified in front of Congress many times throughout his career. He also worked diligently to bring about change at the local level, helping formulate BU’s Climate Action Plan Task Force and the University’s 10-year plan to cut its greenhouse gas emissions.

Tony came to BU in 2013 as a professor in the Department of Earth & Environment and as director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. His teaching inspired students from a broad range of disciplines in the social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Before coming to BU, he worked for NASA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Joint Global Change Research Institute at the University of Maryland. Outside of his career, Tony was a loving husband, father, and brother, and had a passion for his New England home and sports teams.
