David Roochnik has been named the inaugural Maria Stata Professor in Classical Greek Studies.

In 2012/2013, BU entered the public phase of its first capital campaign. Since then, many alumni, parents, and other friends of CAS have stepped up with gifts to our annual fund and for particular critical projects. By the end of the 2013 fiscal year, CAS had received $46,049,367 in gift funds, keeping us on track to meet a total campaign goal of $100 million and making a real difference to the quality of education and research at the College. Here are some examples of recent gifts—and their impact:

  • Maria Stata (CAS’62) created the Maria Stata Professorship in Classical Greek Studies with a $2.5 million gift. David Roochnik, professor and chair of philosophy, was appointed the chair’s first holder.
  • The Drapkin-Fasel Graduate Fellowship Fund in Judaic Studies will offer graduate fellowships in the Division of Religious & Theological Studies beginning in the 2014/15 academic year. The fellowships were made possible by a legacy gift of $1.1 million from the late Dr. Ida Fasel, a poet, scholar, and longstanding friend of the College.
  • On learning that Astronomy Department students had to use 10-year-old computers to connect to major telescopes for their astronomical observations, David S. Katz (CAS’80, LAW’85) made a gift that, in partnership with a CAS match, underwrote the purchase of nine brand new computers, monitors, and related equipment.
  • The Henry S. Newman Graduate Fellowship will support a student pursuing a doctoral dissertation on a topic related to immigration in America.
  • Former PhD students of Chemistry Professor Richard Laursen honored him by endowing a research award that will be given annually to an accomplished chemistry student.
  • Two sets of parents and one alumna have established three Century Challenge scholarships; each one provides a $100,000 endowment that will aid undergraduate students with financial need.
  • CAS board member Susan Jaffe Tane (SED’64) is helping extend for another five years Professor Robert Pinsky’s Summer Poetry Institute—a week-long session for K–12 teachers from across the country to enhance their understanding of poetry and their pedagogical skills.

CAS Leadership Advisory Board

The CAS Leadership Advisory Board (LAB) has played a leading role in ensuring the success of the Campaign for CAS. The alumni, friends, and parents who comprise the board advise the Dean on broad matters of policy and planning within the college. They also help foster relationships and connections with potential students and their families, alumni, and potential employers, as well as with individuals, corporations, and other organizations that might be in a position to support the College and its mission. (See Appendix, Table 10. The Campaign for CAS: 2013 Status Report.)
