Field of Study: MS in Computer Science

Abhishek Malakar, from Mumbai, India, completed his MS in Computer Science in January 2024. He is currently working at OpenGov Inc. as a software engineer after months of searching and interviewing. We sat down with Abhishek to take a deep dive into his journey and get his advice to fellow GRS students in this exclusive Q&A session.

What initially drew you to this field? How did your experiences (academic or professional) solidify your passion for this area of study?

Abhishek gained software development experience in India, independently building projects for a university. Passionate about creating and exploring new technologies, he seeked an MS in the US to advance his career and expand his skill set. While recognizing the limitations of pursuing a formal CS education in India, he aimed to leverage his self-taught abilities in a professional setting. Aspiring to explore management alongside technical roles, Abhishek’s exposure to the financial industry ignited an interest in applying computational solutions to diverse fields. BU’s emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration aligned with his vision of a more inclusive technological landscape.

Could you describe a time when you encountered a significant academic challenge in your graduate studies? How did you approach this obstacle, and what did you learn from the experience?

As an overachiever, he often took on extra courses and part-time jobs, making necessary the development of strong time management skills. To streamline his workload, he strategically selected courses without final exams or heavy assignments, facing the logistical challenge of balancing multiple coursework, examinations, and a personal portfolio.

What is one thing you believe is crucial for academic/professional success but is overlooked by many?

Understanding the importance of rest, he recognized the potential for burnout when constantly pushing one’s limits. While hard work is essential for achieving goals, neglecting self-care can negatively impact mental health and overall performance. Prioritizing well-being is crucial for personal and professional success, especially in highly competitive fields. Developing hobbies and creating boundaries between work and personal life allows for mental clarity and rejuvenation.

What are some opportunities and resources at BU that you’ve utilized and would recommend others to leverage during their time at BU that will benefit them in the future too?

Admission resources such as live Q&A’s and information sessions offered by GRS, along with insights from current faculty, alumni, and students, empower prospective students to make informed decisions about graduate school. Once enrolled, BU provides career fairs connecting students with recruiters, aiding in career alignment. Additionally, Center for Career Development offers resume and cover letter critiques, mock interviews, and valuable market insights. Student organizations further enhance technical and interpersonal skills, contributing to overall growth and development.

How did graduate school at BU prepare you for professional life?

Courses offered enhanced his technical proficiency while fostering interpersonal skills through group projects. Opportunities to lead or collaborate within teams mirrored real-world work environments. The curriculum aligned with industry demands, allowing students to tailor their education to personal interests.

Could you share a strategy or a technique you implemented that helps you achieve an efficient work life balance during graduate school?

Understanding the importance of work-life balance, he learned to prioritize breaks and engage in hobbies to rejuvenate his mind.

Did you have a mentor, professor, or colleague who significantly impacted your success? How did their guidance shape your path?

Professors exhibited exceptional people skills and were readily available to support students’ needs. BU fostered a supportive environment with mentors guiding job searches and empowering students to create personalized career paths.

A supportive network is crucial for success. How did you build your support network during your studies or professional life? What advice do you have for other students in building theirs?

Students should actively seek opportunities to network by attending industry events and tech talks. Rather than focusing solely on personal gain, it’s essential to listen attentively to others, inquiring about their work and career paths. Understanding their experiences and accomplishments provides valuable insights into potential career directions. Building a strong professional network requires developing effective interpersonal skills and identifying one’s unique strengths.

What were some of the research or internship opportunities you experienced while at BU that helped shape your future career?

Group projects integrated into coursework fostered both technical and interpersonal skills. Students learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration while working alongside peers.

What would you say to people who are currently in their graduate school journey?

While an MS can enhance career prospects, it’s crucial to approach the decision thoughtfully. Passion for the chosen field is essential, as the program is demanding and fast-paced. Thorough research, including attending college events and speaking with alumni, helps clarify program expectations and course selection.
