The recent death of former Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino (Hon.’01) saddened many in the BU and CAS community who had the fortune to work with him or know him personally. During his tenure as Boston’s longest-serving mayor from 1993 to 2014, Menino built a national reputation for encouraging inclusion and innovation while consistently going the extra mile to make sure city residents were getting the help they needed.
Nine months ago, following his final term in office, Menino joined the ranks of the CAS faculty to codirect the newly established Initiative on Cities (IoC) along with Chair of Political Science Graham Wilson. The Department of Political Science, where Menino was Professor of the Practice, released this statement about their time with the former mayor:
“The Department of Political Science offers its condolences to the families and friends of Mayor Thomas Menino. We are proud of the fact that he was Professor of the Practice in our department. We admired his enthusiasm and skills in sharing his experiences and insights with students both in classes and over pizza. His eagerness to create the National Survey of Mayoral Priorities led by two members of the department (Professors Einstein and Glick) demonstrated his strong wish to build bridges between the academy and government. We will miss his contributions.” Read more
