The College of Arts and Sciences is saddened by the death of Lu Lingzi (GRS’14), a Master’s degree student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Lu is one of three people who died in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing. Martin Richard, 8, of the Dorchester section of Boston, and Krystle Campbell, of Medford, a 29-year-old restaurant manager, also died in the attack.
“Lu Lingzi was an exceptionally bright Master’s degree student in statistics in our department,” said Tasso Kaper, professor of mathematics and statistics and department chair. “Lingzi did very well in her courses this current academic year, her first with us.” Lu graduated from a Shenyang high school and studied international trade at Beijing Institute of Technology before coming to Boston University to study statistics.
On Monday morning, just before going to see the marathon, Lu and fellow graduate students Hunter Glanz, Ian Johnston, Lijun Peng, and Min Hui completed a research poster for an upcoming conference project. “They Skyped together in the morning to put the finishing touches on the poster to meet the deadline,” said Luis Carvalho, assistant professor of mathematics and statistics.
“Lu Lingzi was in the full glory of an extremely successful year as an MA student, with an extremely bright future ahead of her,” said Kaper. “For us, it is a great personal and professional tragedy to learn that such a bright and energetic young scientist has died.”
Danling Zhou (MET’14), one of Lu’s closest friends and an MA student in actuarial sciences, also was injured in the blast and is recovering at Boston Medical Center.
