The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) wants to bring three announcements to your attention: 1) the deadline for student applications for fall semester UROP funding is Wednesday, September 18, 2013; 2) the ability to post on the UROP website descriptions of opportunities for undergraduates to perform research under your mentorship; and 3) an invitation to non-UROP-supported undergraduate researchers to participate in the annual UROP Symposium on October 18, 2013. Details of each are provided below.
Application Information UROP is a University-wide program that helps undergraduate students find and participate in faculty-mentored research projects. In addition, UROP provides financial support for such research projects. BU faculty members in all departments are eligible to mentor undergraduate research projects. UROP’s next round of funding will be for the Fall 2013 semester with applications due by noon on Wednesday, September 18th. Students receiving funding for the Fall semester typically perform 15-20 hours of research per week. Students can apply for the following UROP awards for Fall Semester:
- Student Research Award (SRA): up to $2,000 student stipend, paid entirely by UROP;
- Faculty Matching Grant (FMG): up to $2,000 student stipend, with the cost shared by UROP and the faculty mentor’s department/grant; and
- Funded Research Opportunity Grant (FROG): awards up to $750 for research supplies, transferred directly to faculty mentor’s department.
Posting a Research Opportunity As students return to campus, many will begin to look for research opportunities. If you are interested in mentoring an undergraduate, we encourage you to submit a research opportunity for posting on our website. Your project can be listed as a volunteer effort (for students who are seeking initial, practical, hands-on experiences), as a project for credit (e.g., independent study), or as a paid opportunity. You can submit your opportunity by clicking here.
Annual UROP Symposium The 16th Annual UROP Symposium will be held during Parent’s Weekend on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 11am – 1:30pm in the GSU Metcalf Ballroom. This Symposium features posters by students who conducted UROP-sponsored research during summer 2013. However, we also welcome posters by undergraduate students who have conducted research, either during the academic year or summer, whether supported by UROP or other sources. Symposium participants will need to present their poster for one hour during the event. If you have a non-UROP student who wishes to participate in the Symposium, they must submit an abstract by early September. The abstracts will be published in the UROP Symposium booklet. If you have mentored an undergraduate who is interested in presenting their research at the UROP Symposium, please have the student send an email to urop@bu.edu or call the office at 3-2020. We can then provide them with information about the abstract, the poster and the Symposium. Feel free to contact the UROP office with any questions.
