BU CDS welcomes Maureen McCarthy

As we close the books on the Fall semester, CDS is delighted to welcome Maureen McCarthy as its inaugural Director of Communications.

Maureen is an accomplished editorial director and content strategist with a distinguished record of delivering effective and impactful digital and print communications. She is an award-winning editor, nationally published journalist, and result-driven communicator dedicated to elevating brands through insightful website content, social media and email campaign marketing, community outreach, and event/conference planning.

In her new role and as a member of the administrative leadership team in CDS, Maureen will lead the communications and content strategy, overseeing CDS’ editorial and content creation, digital presence and website production, social media, email, and media relations strategy development and implementation efforts.

In his welcome email to CDS faculty and staff, Associate Provost Azer Bestavros noted, "how important Maureen’s role will be as CDS moves (both physically and operationally) from being “under construction” over the last three years to being “open for business” this academic year – a year during which we are unveiling our new home, launching a properly branded and thought-out web presence, accelerating the growth of our faculty and staff, expanding our curriculum, welcoming our inaugural matriculants last fall, and sending off our first cohort of CDS graduates next spring. These and more are the stories that Maureen will help us communicate."

Prior to joining CDS, Maureen led communications efforts for BU Digital Learning & Innovation. She is an adjunct lecturer with BU College of Communication (2022), BU Women's Guild Communications co-chair, a  member of BU D&I Allies & Advocates for Faculty & Staff, a recipient of Newbury Center Terrier F1RST training, and a Tri-Alpha National Honor Society inductee.

Before joining BU, Maureen was the editorial director for four wellness magazines and several award-winning companion websites (Gluten-Free Living, Pain-Free Living, and Practical Diabetology), serving as editor-in-chief of Diabetes Self-Management. Maureen’s communications experience also includes elevating the mission of Boston Children’s Hospital as a digital editor and senior writer.

A local and nationally published journalist, Maureen covered the Massachusetts high-tech industry as a business correspondent for the Boston Business Journal. And for more than a decade, she authored stories as a real estate columnist, business, and features correspondent for the Patriot Ledger and Enterprise, with published work in dozens of local, regional, and national GateHouse Media publications.

Beyond her professional experiences and affiliations, Maureen blends her deep devotion to Boston Children’s Hospital and passion for cooking by preparing home-cooked meals for families at Boston Children’s Yawkey Family Inn, the hospital’s patient-family housing program.
