CDS Duan Family Faculty Fellows Program

Duan Family Faculty (DFF) Fellow appointments recognize capacity for significant future contributions to the vision and mission of CDS. Any Boston University faculty member, or group of faculty, can nominate a DFF Fellow, with the support of the Dean of the nominee’s home unit. Relying on the nominee’s track record, including prior engagements with the faculty or programs in CDS, nominations must detail:

  • How the nominee will contribute to the CDS mission of pursuing cutting-edge computational and data-driven research that matters to society, and providing students with vibrant academic experiences.
  • How appointment of the nominee as fellow will benefit the nominee’s home academic unit and how it will contribute to connecting that unit with CDS.

Evaluation and Selection Criteria:

  • Track record of engagement with CDS
  • Track record of leading initiatives that go beyond individual scholarship
  • Track record of mentorship of doctoral students and of junior faculty members
  • Track record of, and potential for, securing extramural support of research trainees
  • Potential for contribution to current CDS teaching and research needs
  • Potential for short-term and longer-term impact on CDS research priorities
  • Potential for connecting CDS with other strategic initiatives across the University
  • Potential for leadership of future educational or research programs in CDS

Nomination and Appointment Process:

  • Any BU faculty member or group of faculty members may nominate candidates to be considered for appointment as DFF Fellows.
  • Nominations must be submitted by the last day of classes of the Fall semester to the Associate Provost for CDS and must be accompanied by a letter of support from the Dean of the nominee’s home academic unit.
  • Selection of successful candidates is made by the Associate Provost based on feedback from core CDS faculty and subject to established CDS faculty appointment processes.
  • Successful candidates and the Chairs and Deans of their home academic units will be informed of selection by the Associate Provost for CDS by the middle of the Spring semester.
  • Terms of appointment as CDS DFF Fellows will be finalized through the Provost’s office and a university-wide announcement made before the end of the Spring semester.

Nomination forms will be available here soon.
