A Renaissance and Baroque Trombone and Trumpet Festival
At Marsh Chapel (735 Commonwealth Avenue) on April 8th at 2:30 p.m., come join Boston University College of Fine Arts celebrate the musicality of brass instruments.
This is a unique concert featuring original Renaissance and Baroque music for brass. Performed in a chapel reminding one of the setting in St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Italy, where the magnificent antiphonal music of Giovanni Gabrieli was featured in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The concert will include three such antiphonal works by Gabrieli the largest of which uses 22 players in five choirs scattered throughout the chapel. This is truly a sonic experience!
Two vocal soloists are featured on this concert: James Demler, baritone, in Heinrich Schutz’s “Attendite, Popule Meus, Legem Meam” and Pamela Wolfe, soprano, in Andreas Hammerschmidt’s “Nun lob, men Seel, den Herren”. Pamela sang this on the original concert in 1977.
This entire concert is an exact repeat of that concert presented in Marsh Chapel April 30, 1977. Other works on the concert feature current Boston University faculty and students, as well as members of the current Boston Symphony Orchestra trombone section, who perform in Sonatas by Daniel Speer. This concert is a must for anyone who loves glorious brass music in a glorious setting.
