As a student, you may experience a range of challenges that may impact your mental health and wellness that can interfere with academic experiences and negatively impact your daily life, such as strained relationships, increased anxiety, problems with eating and/or sleeping, substance use, feeling down, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation. We all experience stressful and difficult events as a normal part of life. If you are seeking guidance, resources, or support for your mental health and well being, there are many avenues to pursue at Boston University and beyond, no matter what kind of support you are seeking.
This non-comprehensive guide is meant to highlight some of the most commonly utilized resources by our community at BU, in Boston, and online. Remember that getting help is a smart and courageous thing to do – for yourself, for those you care about, and for those who care about you.

BU Behavioral Health Services
Behavioral Medicine offers a range of mental health services to our students. They specialize in assessment and diagnosis; brief treatment, including therapy and psychiatry for a variety of mental health issues; and referral to community resources for longer-term care.
This means they can refer you to qualified therapists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses who are a quick walk or T-ride from campus. Community providers have various specialties including working with eating disorders, trauma, OCD and substance abuse. They can also refer students to clinicians with expertise in providing services to LGBTQ students, our international student population and more.
Behavioral Medicine offers various workshops and groups to help you address a variety of mental health related needs. Participating in one of these options will help decrease isolation and expand your support network, while gaining effective coping skills.

Gender Affirming Healthcare
Student Health Services (SHS) is committed to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare to transgender and non-binary students. Their providers and staff are dedicated to affirming healthcare practices that create an inclusive and supportive environment.
The Gender-Affirming Healthcare Team is an interdisciplinary group of providers specifically trained in affirming care for transgender and non-binary students. The team consists of doctors, nurses, and counselors across multiple SHS departments.

LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center
The LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center is an inclusive and safe environment for all members of the community. With a deep commitment to recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by queer and trans students, the center will offer accessible resources, sustain inclusive community groups, introduce intersectional programming, and empower individuals in their pursuit of authentic self-expression within the university setting.

Headspace
The Wellbeing Project has partnered with Athletics, Graduate Education, and Student Health Services to offer all BU students free access to Headspace – a research-backed app for mindfulness and meditation. Over 2,000 scientific studies support the positive effects of meditation. Just 10 days of using Headspace has been shown to result in a 14% decrease in stress.

Resources for Wellbeing
Student Health, along with the BU Health Promotion & Prevention Office, offer vital resources for students to maintain physical, emotional, social, environmental, intellectual, financial, and spiritual wellness throughout the semester. Additionally, the Wellbeing Project has transformed into a formal department. A new initiative of the Provost’s Office, this department will strive to create a holistic, integrated, and shared approach to wellbeing on all of BU’s campuses. Students will learn to engage in their own wellbeing via campus programming and initiatives, and will gain social-emotional skills as part of their academic experience.

BU’s Sargent Choice Nutrition Center is a wonderful, robust resource that can assist students with anything from eating healthier to eating more consistently. Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Center
SARP provides professional, rapid, confidential, and free-of-charge advocacy and assistance to BU students who have experienced a traumatic incident, including immediate crisis response. Their particular focus is sexual trauma and rape; they also assist survivors of physical assault, interpersonal violence, and other crimes.
SARP is a confidential resource, providing resources as to where students can receive appropriate medical care, both immediate and longer term as necessary; confidential individual counseling and/or referrals to community resources as appropriate; Confidential group sessions; help with resources for academic and personal support; information for friends, family, and others affected by violence or trauma; assistance to survivors of other violent crimes and traumatic incidents, and more.

Togetherall is a NEW anonymous, online 24/7 peer support platform. It is completely FREE to use for all BU students (including online students) and is monitored 24/7 by mental health professionals. Students can share their experiences with other students in this global community, join groups based on interests, create art to express themselves, and reach out to a mental health professional with a question at any time. The platform also includes helpful articles, wellbeing courses, and self-assessments. Students must use their BU email address to join.

Arbour Counseling Services offers programs for patients of all ages through an outpatient continuum of care. With multiple locations throughout Massachusetts, Arbour Counseling Services prioritizes quality and convenience for the communities they serve. Their Boston Center is located in Allston.
