BU Tanglewood Institute: Announcing 2020 Conductors

Paul Haas is a conductor and composer, and a large part of his work involves creating musical and visual experiences for unusual venues. Haas serves as Music Director of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, as well as Artistic Director of Sympho, which creates radically engaging live orchestral experiences for the 21st century. Celebrating more than 30 years of professional conducting, Miguel Harth-Bedoya is a master of color, drawing idiomatic interpretations from a wide range of repertoire in concerts across the globe.  He has amassed considerable experience at the helm of orchestras with 2019/20 his seventh season as Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and his 20th and final season as Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. With a dual career as a clarinet performer and conductor, David J. Martins balances orchestral and chamber venues with an active teaching and conducting schedule. He is a Master Lecturer in the School of Music at Boston University where he is Music Director of the Wind Ensemble and teaches Applied Clarinet, Chamber Music, and Graduate Conducting. Read more.

Ruth Reinhardt is quickly establishing herself as one of today’s most dynamic and nuanced young conductors. She served as the Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) for two seasons under Jaap van Zweden and concluded her tenure at the end of the 2017/2018 season. Read more.

H. Robert Reynolds is the Principal Conductor of the Wind Ensemble at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California where he holds the H. Robert Reynolds Professorship in Wind Conducting. This appointment followed his retirement, after 26 years, from the School of Music of the University of Michigan where he served as the Henry F. Thurnau Professor of Music, Director of University Bands and Director of the Division of Instrumental Studies. Read more. 

Mallory Thompson is director of bands, professor of music, coordinator of the conducting program, and holds the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university’s history to hold the director of bands position, Dr. Thompson conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program.
