BU College of Fine Arts partners with Boston Public Schools, announces new tuition scholarship for BPS employees
The partnership provides BPS employees with a discounted tuition rate scholarship for CFA’s online and on-campus master’s programs in Art Education and Music Education
Sharing a mutual vision of improving professional growth and development opportunities for art and music administrators and educators, Boston University College of Fine Arts (CFA) and Boston Public Schools (BPS) have partnered to offer BPS employees a discounted tuition rate scholarship towards a master’s degree in art or music education at BU College of Fine Arts.
BPS employees are now eligible to receive the BPS Scholarship offered by CFA, amounting to 33% of the then-current tuition rate, when they apply and are admitted to one of the following master’s programs starting in Fall 2023: Master of Arts in Art Education (on-campus), Master of Arts in Art Education (online), Master of Music in Music Education (on-campus), and Master of Music in Music Education (online).
“The College of Fine Arts greatly values the work of BPS employees. We hope this opportunity allows those who are interested to take a deeper dive into the teaching approaches for students in music education and art education. We look forward to welcoming BPS employees through this initiative,”
Committed to continuously enhancing graduate-level training to meet the learning and developmental needs of BPS employees, the new scholarship provides accessibility and affordability to administrators and educators of BPS looking to advance in their careers and strengthen their teaching and leadership skills. BPS is an urban school district of 119 schools, where staff and teachers educate nearly 49,000 elementary, middle, and high school students.
“The arts are core to BPS’ mission of educating the whole child,” said Superintendent Mary Skipper. “Partnerships like these are vital to giving our students a well-rounded education in the arts so that they have the opportunity to explore and discover their creativity. Boston University College of Fine Arts is one of the best this nation has to offer and the quality of education that our employees will receive is superb. Helping our teachers advance their education is a priority of ours because not only does it enable retainment and recruitment, but they will in turn impart their invaluable knowledge and wisdom to our students.”
As the birthplace of public education in the nation, BPS is committed to transforming the lives of children and adolescents through exemplary teaching in innovative and welcoming schools. BU College of Fine Arts’ education programs are designed with that in mind.
The Art Education programs at BU College of Fine Arts School of Visual Arts focus on individually selected areas of study that include developing methods that teach children and adolescents to think visually and to create art that has personal meaning in schools, museums, or community settings. The flexible modalities – of choosing between an in-person or fully online art education program – provide an extended professional development through an advanced degree for those already in the field. Graduate students benefit from courses offering in-depth enrichment in the historical roots of their discipline of choice and critical perspectives on contemporary theories and art practices.
The Music Education programs offered through BU College of Fine Arts School of Music, have had a long-standing relationship with BPS and other urban and suburban school systems and organizations. The program prepares graduates to develop new skills in high-quality music instruction, use professional and personal insights to improve pedagogical practices, and demonstrate awareness of theoretical, philosophical, and historical traditions that have shaped and continue to influence music education. The online music education program has received national recognition, ranked #38 best online Master’s in Music Education in the nation by Intelligent.com and #4 in a top 10 online Master’s in Music Education degree programs list by Early Childhood Education Degrees. Students in the program can earn their degree in as little as 20 months.
BPS employees applying to one of the four programs must meet the current CFA admissions criteria. The BPS scholarship only applies to courses offered at CFA. Financial aid opportunities, in terms of student loans, are available to participants of the program. BPS employees have access to CFA’s state-of-the-art venues and facilities, libraries, computer resources, recreational facilities, student ID cards and associated discounts, and other student perks. In addition, they also have access to the same counseling and advising services, and other administrative resources, that are available to BU graduate students.
