Lifebook: Living in Lenox
Though small in size, Lenox is a vibrant town located in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts. It is the summer home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood and several other arts organizations, great food, and great people. You can walk to most places, and music is everywhere you turn.
Banking & Checking
Students are discouraged from bringing large amounts of cash to Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Most establishments in Lenox accept major credit and debit cards. Students may consider bringing a form of card payment, which could include a prepaid and ‘reloadable’ card in lieu of cash.
There are Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) available in Lenox and on the Tanglewood Grounds (withdrawals may be subject to fees by the user’s bank and/or ATM). The following banks are located in Lenox:

Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerts
BUTI students enjoy access to all Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center events (not including the Popular Artists Series). For a full schedule of performances, please visit the BSO website.
Community Programming
Throughout the course of the summer programs, the Student Life Staff will be offering various extracurricular activities and programs that will be wide-ranging in scope and interest in order to appeal to as many students as possible. They will be providing yoga, sports, and game recreation on campus as well as opportunities to explore the Berkshire area and its cultural attractions through field trip excursions. Dances, ice-cream socials, movie and mall trips are all examples of scheduled events. Activities are planned in advance and advertised on bulletin boards in student dorms, in Groton Place, and announced during weekly student floor meetings. For questions about upcoming activities, students are encouraged to ask their Student Community Leaders for more information or to inquire at the Student Life Office.
Off-campus Guest Lodging
Students may not have visitors, family, or friends stay overnight or visit past 10:00 P.M. anywhere on West Street Campus. There are several motels, inns, guest houses, bed and breakfast facilities, and campgrounds with recreational vehicle parks in the area that provide accommodations. Information, including lodging referrals, can be obtained from the Lenox Chamber of Commerce by calling (413) 637-3646 or visiting their web page at www.lenox.org, or the Berkshire Visitors Bureau by calling (413) 499-1600 or visiting their web page at www.berskshires.org.
Religious Services
There are numerous houses of worship and services offered in the Lenox area. Information about local churches can be obtained from the Lenox Chamber of Commerce by calling (413) 637-3646 or visiting their website.
If a student wishes to attend services within 15 minutes driving distance from campus, they should inquire with the Student Life Office at least 48 hours in advance for the Student Life Staff to arrange transportation.
Please be reminded that students may not travel in vehicles other than their parent/guardian’s or BUTI transportation without express written parental/guardian permission (see “Motor Vehicles and Parking” in Rules & Regulations).
