Funding Opportunities for Interdisciplinary Research on Forced Displacement

The Center on Forced Displacement (CFD) is pleased to announce funding opportunities for innovative and interdisciplinary research projects focused on forced displacement. Funding is available on a rolling basis for both individual researchers and collaborative, interdisciplinary teams. Proposals should align with one or more of CFD’s four research pillars:

  1. Healthy Lives and Meaningful Livelihoods
    Investigating the intersection of health, well-being, and economic opportunities for displaced populations, including access to healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods.
  2. Art, Expression, Identities
    Exploring the roles of art, culture, and identity in the lives of displaced individuals and communities, including how creative practices can foster resilience and agency.
  3. Human Environments and Climates
    Examining the relationships between displacement, environmental change, and climate adaptation, focusing on the impact of ecological shifts and strategies for sustainable living.
  4. Training and Ethical Engagement
    Promoting ethical and effective practices in research and engagement with displaced populations, including the development of training programs and collaborative methodologies.

Eligibility:

  • Individual researchers or interdisciplinary teams focusing on forced displacement-related issues and research.
  • Projects must clearly connect to one or more CFD research pillars and propose innovative approaches to understanding or addressing forced displacement.

Funding Details:

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline.
  • Funding amounts will vary depending on project scope and objectives.
  • The PI (for the individual grant) and at least one of the PIs (for the team grant) must be a CFD Affiliate Faculty member. 
  • CFD would like to support projects with long-term plans, and we encourage all applicants to think beyond this seed grant and include plans for follow-up funding in their application.

Application Materials: 

  • A short (2-page) research proposal which should include
  • The goals of the proposed research, its significance, its potential impact, and connection with one of the four themes of CFD
  • A description of the research team: collaborators and schools represented 
  • A description of the interdisciplinary nature of the project for individual researchers
  • Anticipated research outcomes
  • Plans for follow-on funding
  • Timeline of the proposed project
  • CV (2 page maximum) of PI and co-PI (if relevant)
  • Budget (funding may be used for student or post-doctoral scholar support and fringe benefits, travel, or supplies. Funds may not be used for faculty summer salary or course release)
