Issues of Power and Mission/Missiology
The Association of Professors of Mission extends an open call for paper presentation proposals for its annual meeting
Theme:
The concern about issues of power has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Issues of political, social, and economic power as natural processes as well as the abuse of various types of power have been prominently and repeatedly noted. Less obvious in current discussions of missions is the understanding and awareness of these issues of power within mission, a missiological context, or mission pedagogy/andragogy. It is likewise noteworthy that throughout Church History, missionary activity frequently had been tied to political (e.g., the latter Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, or the colonial powers) or economic power which informed the missological thinking and implementation of the mission at their respective times. Understanding these dynamics can impact the teaching of mission history as well as our contemporary engagement and teaching of missiology, mission, and their respective implementation. The focus of the APM 2022 Conference is to engage the issues of power in relation to mission and missiology especially for teachers of mission. The goal of this conference is to intentionally provide appropriate, proactive, and positive engagements with the issues of power related to mission for the expressed purpose to be better professors of Mission.
Projected Sub-themes:
- Biblical and theological engagement of power issues
- Issues of power and its demonstration(s) in mission
- Mission agencies and institutions with issues of power
- Teaching about Issues of Power in Missions
- Doctoral Student Track (doctoral students who have their proposal accepted will receive a scholarship for the registration fee)
