Appointment of Dr. Phillip Haberkern as Director of UROP
Dr. Phillip Haberkern, a CGCM faculty associate, has been appointed director of Boston University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), effective October 1. Dr. Haberkern is an associate professor of history in the College of Arts & Sciences and has been a member of the BU faculty since 2011. He is a historian of late medieval and early modern Europe, with a research focus on radical religious changes in Central Europe. His courses focus on the early modern world, including classes on the Renaissance, Reformation, and the impact of global exploration on European culture. Dr. Haberkern serves as the faculty director of BU’s Trustee Scholars Program, overseeing the selection and recruitment of recipients of the Trustee Scholarship, BU’s merit-based, full-tuition scholarship, and fostering community among the Trustee Scholars. He has also received BU’s Templeton Award for Student Advising and the Gerald and Deanne Gitner Family Undergraduate Teaching Prize in History.
Dr. Haberkern has served both as a member of the faculty selection committee and as a student mentor for UROP during his time at BU. As program director, he works with students, faculty, and staff across the University to develop opportunities for undergraduates in all disciplines to conduct mentored original research. He oversees office and budget management, the annual research symposium, summer and academic year research programs, fundraising activities, and the newly created UROP advisory board.
