Scholarships

It has long been said that no student who belongs at Boston University should have to choose to go elsewhere because of financial concerns; this is equally true of our student-athletes.

Scholarships are the core around which athletics programs are built, as they ensure that institutions can attract the most qualified student-athletes. Since 2010, BU Athletics has realized a 50 percent increase in donor-funded scholarships. Still, there is work to be done, and we lag in this area compared to peers. Georgetown has twice as many; Loyola of Maryland has three times; and Boston College boasts almost 10 times more donor-funded athletics scholarships than Boston University. With your support, we are confident that we will be able to continue supporting our student-athletes at the highest possible levels.

Current-use Scholarships: for Immediate Impact

Every dollar of every gift that creates or contributes to a current-use scholarship fund is used to support recipients of that scholarship, until funds are exhausted or renewed by the donor. These immediate-impact scholarships can be named for the donor or an honoree of the donor’s choosing. The naming of endowments must be approved by the University.

Additionally, donors giving at any level are invited to invest in the general Terrier Athletics Scholarship Fund. Each year, donors to the Terrier Athletics Scholarship Fund receive notification of their chosen recipient, as well as a stewardship report updating them on the fund’s performance, scholarship award, and recipient. Donors will also be invited to the Athletics Leaders Celebration to meet their recipient and be recognized for their support.

Endowed Scholarships: for Long-term Success

For long-term success in athletics, endowed scholarships are key. They are the foundation that guarantees we will be able to attract talented student-athletes who may be otherwise unable to afford to attend BU, or might be lured away by bigger and better scholarship offers.

The Century Challenge: an Unprecedented Opportunity

BU’s history of inclusion for all is mirrored in President Brown’s own challenge proposal: the Century Challenge. This unique philanthropic effort greatly increases scholarship support and keeps our doors open to the best and brightest students from around the world.

If you establish an endowed scholarship fund of $100,000 or greater—a scholarship that will bear the name of your choosing—BU will match, dollar for dollar, the income distributed from your fund for scholarship purposes for a period of 100 years following the fund’s activation. We will provide these matching funds for the first $100 million of endowment support pledged to the Century Challenge.
