2023 Graduate Award Winners

The Graduate Program Committee has announced the winners of the 2023 Graduate Student Awards.

The Lichtin Award, for research excellence in Chemistry goes to Leslie Velasco from the Reinhard Group, who excelled at pushing the boundaries of research, including developing a microscope providing new and improved spectral resolution for the visualization of nanoplasmonic assemblies.

The Feldman Award recognizes contributions to not only research, but the educational and service missions of the department. This year, the award goes to Kaijie Ji from the Porco Group, a scholar who has published several papers, and whose nominator notes his incredible potential as a leader and mentor in science.

The Sugata Ray Award, for international students who excel in all aspects of graduate student life, is awarded to Lea Toubiana of the Doerrer Group, who has engaged in exciting and productive research, and is lauded for her leadership in her group.

The Dr. Sandeep Singh Puar Endowed Graduate Fellowship was established by Dr. Mohindar Puar (CH PhD 1966) and his wife Surinder in memory of their son, Sandeep Singh Puar. This award goes to Shawn Moore of the Doerrer Group for his acumen and excellence in research and citizenship and leadership amongst his graduate student peers.

The Laursen Graduate Research Award, established by Professor Emeritus Richard Laursen, is given to a graduate student who demonstrates exceptional promise as a researcher. This year, Qishuo Tan of the Ling Group was awarded this award for his work in physical chemistry.

The Director’s Awards for Excellence go to Kaijie Ji from the Porco Group, Soubhik Mondal from the Bravaya Group, Matthew Vince from the Whitty Group, and Emma Dolan and Danielle Fitzgerald from the Grinstaff Group.
