Prof. Foltz Publishes New Research on Digital Cinema
In the most recent issue of Critical Quarterly, Prof. Jonathan Foltz has published new research on the aesthetics of digital video in Harmony Korine’s singular film julien donkey-boy. Prof. Foltz shows how the film, by exploiting the noise and flatness of its DV images, suggests a re-evaluation of the aesthetics of digital cinema, so often glossed solely in its relation to new scales of cosmetic manipulation. His article attempts to recover critical sensitivity to the weakened ‘index’ of digital cinema, and suggests a need to rethink digital cinema as a medium of lapsed, degenerate contingency.
