Brian Bergstrom on "Battle Royale"

About the speaker: Brian Bergstrom is a lecturer and translator currently based in Montréal. After graduate school at University of Chicago and Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, he has worked over ten years in the East Asian Studies Department at McGill University and published in academic journals such as Mechademia, positions: asia critique, and Japan Forum on Japanese literature and contemporary society, with a specialty in youth culture and youth violence. Bergstrom’s published translations include
the collection We, the Children of Cats by Tomoyuki Hoshino (PM Press), which was
longlisted for the 2013 Best Translated Book Award. His translation of the novel Trinity,
Trinity, Trinity by Erika Kobayashi will be published by Astra House Books in 2022.
While in Tokyo, Brian attended the first screenings of Battle Royale that were made open to newly-graduated middle schoolers in its debut year. He will share that experience and analyze the film as both a work of cinema and a multimedia cultural product and social phenomenon.
