CAS Names Sydney Gross as Assistant Dean of Communications

Sydney Gross has joined CAS in the new role of Assistant Dean for Communications. Sydney and her office will work with CISS and other units to enhance the visibility of faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate research, teaching, and service. Prior to joining BU Sydney held important communications roles in higher education. Most recently, she was a Communications and Media Relations Specialist at Hebrew College. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of Communications for Columbia College at Columbia University, where she was responsible for the college’s communication’s strategy, media relations for college units, student communications, the dean’s and senior leadership’s communications, and strategic initiatives communications, and collaborated closely with University Public Affairs. Before moving into higher education, Sydney was a reporter for the Patriot Ledger (Quincy, MA) and the Republican-American (Waterbury, CT).

In her role as Assistant Dean for Communications, Sydney will be responsible for developing and executing the communications strategy for Arts & Sciences. This strategy will help raise the college’s profile internally and externally; promote the liberal arts educational and research experiences that define Arts & Sciences; and foster a sense of community and common identity across the broad and diverse areas that make up Arts & Sciences. Sydney also will be working with departments and units from across the college and graduate school, as well as Development and Alumni Relations and BU Marketing and Communications, to reach key audiences such as prospective students; alumni, donors, and friends; faculty, staff, and students; and external partners. Sydney will oversee Arts & Sciences content, the Arts & Sciences website and social media presence, publications, visual identity and branding, and, as relevant, targeted marketing opportunities and media relations.

CISS faculty members have a range of supports they can use to increase the visibility of their own work, and will find important resources here.
