GSA CEO James Appleby Visits CISS

James Appleby, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) visited CISS on Thursday February 27, 2025 for a lively meeting with gerontology and geriatrics researchers from throughout BU.

GSA is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. GSA’s principal mission — and that of our over 6,000 members — is to promote the study of aging and disseminate information to scientists, decision makers, and the general public Founded in 1945, GSA is the driving force behind advancing innovation in aging — both domestically and internationally

More than 25 BU graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty, from a dozen departments or schools including sociology, economics, medicine, engineering, social work, rehabilitative sciences and more, as well as the Office of Research and Foundation Relations,  joined to listen to Appleby’s insights into the future of aging research, policy and practice. Participants also gave brief research summaries, and had a lively discussion regarding ways to amplify the impact of their research, and forge fruitful teaching and research collaborations.

The event participants showcased the work of many institutions and programs at BU dedicated to aging research, including the BUMC Geriatrics program directed by Dr. Hollis Day, the BU Center on Aging led by co-director Slava Labunskyy, Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research directed by Bronwyn Keefe, and the New England Centenarian Study co-directed by Stacey Andersen. The meeting was co-organized by Deborah Carr (CISS director and A&S Distinguished Professor of Sociology), Judith Gonyea (Professor, School of Social Work), Bronwyn Keefe (Research Associate Professor, School of Social Work), and Rosanna Lau Ng (Assistant Professor and Medical Director, Nursing Home Program,  Geriatrics, BUSM). This meeting is just the start of future campus-wide collaborations focused on aging research and practice!
