CISS, CAS, and Partners Co-Host May 13 Events on Research Translation and Impact
We face increasingly complex national and global challenges, and effective science communication is more crucial than ever. In 2025, bridging the gap between scientific research and public understanding will be essential for informed decision-making, research support, policy development, and societal engagement. CISS is teaming up with Kathleen Shannon, CAS Director of Research Administration, and Cara Mattaliano, Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships & Community Engagement at BU Wheelock to host two exciting panels to help social scientists increase the ‘real world’ impact of their research. Please register below for one or both workshops!
A Conversation with April English, Chief Secretary, Boards and Commissions, Office of Governor Healey
Serving on a state board or commission can offer BU faculty a powerful opportunity to make an immediate and meaningful impact on state policy. On Tuesday, May 13, Chief Secretary for Boards and Commissions in the Office of Governor Healey April English will share insights into the application process and what it means to serve on a state board or commission.
This virtual event will also feature a panel of BU faculty members who bring firsthand experience in these roles for an engaging discussion on the impact and significance of serving on boards like the Massachusetts Public Health Council and Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.

Do you want to amplify your research to a broader audience?
On Tuesday, May 13 this virtual event will explore strategies and tools that can help you convey your impact to a wide range of audiences—including policymakers, funders, media, the public, and academic peers.
This event will be facilitated by David Flynn, senior research librarian at BU’s Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine and will feature presentations from experts in impact analytics platforms, including Elsevier/SciVal, Overton, and Dimensions. Learn how these tools can help you quantify and enhance the visibility of your work using data-driven approaches supported by BU.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore how these platforms can be tailored to highlight the societal, academic, or economic impact of individual research.
