Presented by David Valecillos, Director of Design, North Shore Community Development Corporation. David Valecillos is an award winning urban planner and real estate developer. a design thinker and data-driven problem solver. His main focus is on district level real estate planning and development. David is passionate about connecting buildings, people and public space. David’s work ranges from developing multi-million dollar multi-site projects and city wide housing market analyzes to planning the initial steps of an innovation district in Barranquilla, Colombia. As Director of Design, David is responsible for overseeing all urban planning projects for the organization including real estate projects. David is also one of the founders and the director of the Punto Urban Art Museum (2017), a social justice public art program in the Point Neighborhood. The museum features 85+ large scale murals and 75 international and local artists. David holds a Masters in City Planning from Boston University where he received the award for excellence in graduate studies. He also holds a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a certificate in Business Administration. David currently serves in the Urban Land Institute Boston Chapter Real Estate Committee and Cambridge’s Public Art Commission.

Beginning in the Fall of 2019, incoming students will be required to maintain an e-portfolio of the work they produce throughout their master’s or certificate program. E-portfolios offer all programs within the Department of Applied Social Sciences the opportunity to collect samples of student work in one place for assessment purposes. E-portfolios are accessible to all students regardless of method of course delivery or modality, class size, or the student’s or instructor’s departmental affiliation. The faculty view portfolios as a tool to measure how well we are meeting our collective goals for student progress; we hope you view it as a chance to capture and showcase your best work demonstrating the core competencies you’ve developed throughout your program. An idea in 2007 to make geographic data easily accessible and understandable to policy makers grew into what is now PolicyMap: a data warehouse of over 50,000 indicators accessible through a state-of-the-art mapping and analytics platform.

From the beginning, the developers at PolicyMap knew that policy makers needed good data to make smart decisions. And that interpreting geographic data on maps was crucial to finding solutions to our most intractable issues. Developers created an intuitive web-based tool for policymakers, business leaders, and researchers to quickly visualize and understand communities across the U.S., and they made sure that no technical skills were required.

Presented by David J. Kraiker, Data Dissemination Specialist, Customer Liaison & Marketing Services Office, Data Dissemination and Training Branch, U.S. Census Bureau. David Kraiker works at the Census Bureau out of the New York City office. He works in Data Dissemination, teaching and instructing clients in how to download and use Census data. Previously, he worked as a Geographer for the Census Bureau, as well as a cartographer at Hammond Maps, Inc. and Geonex. He attended Clark University and Rutgers-Newark.
