Study Latin at BU!
Latin is the language of ancient Rome. It was also the language of mass communication in Europe until the eighteenth century, and knowledge of Latin is very helpful for students interested in European history, theology, philosophy and science.
Students who study Latin will:
- Read stunning, important ancient texts by writers such as Julius Caesar, Virgil, Catullus, and Ovid within a year of instruction.
- Unlock a world of history, culture, theology and science, and it gives us a deeper understanding of the origins of many words in English and in Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian)
The systematic grammar of Latin is often appealing to students with a passion for science and mathematics. Medical students will find that anatomical terminology, which is still drawn mostly Latin, is far easier to memorize when you have some knowledge and training in the language.
Students who have learned Latin have gone on to careers in medicine (such as Dr. Anthony Fauci!), law, education, and editing, among many others.
Four semesters of Latin (or their equivalent) satisfies the CAS Language Requirement at BU. If you have taken some Latin before and are interested in continuing your study, complete a placement test here, so that we can advise you on the appropriate level.
